The biggest wins in betting on Sydney matches

Sydney FC, one of the most successful teams in the league, has repeatedly been involved in matches where bets on the underdogs have brought huge winnings. These events not only changed the course of the season, but also created stories where small bets turned into significant sums thanks to high odds.

Match against Western Sydney Wanderers: 5-0 in 2017

One of the most striking examples occurred on 9 December 2017 in the A-League. Sydney FC, leading the table, faced their arch-rivals, Western Sydney Wanderers, at ANZ Stadium. The Wanderers, playing at home, were considered favourites thanks to their home advantage and recent derby victories. The pre-match odds on morospin-au.com reflected this: Sydney FC were offered at around 3.50, implying a less than 30% chance of success for the visitors.

The match started tensely. The Wanderers controlled the ball in the first 15 minutes, creating several dangerous moments, including a shot against the post from Mitchell Duberry. However, Sydney FC quickly seized the initiative. In the 18th minute, Alex Brosque opened the scoring with a precise shot after a pass from Miso. By half-time, the Blues were leading 2-0, with Anthony Calderaro scoring the second goal in the 35th minute, taking advantage of a mistake by the opposition's defence. In the second half, Sydney FC dominated completely: goals in the 52nd (Brosque, double), 67th (Calderero, double) and 81st minutes (substitute Adam Le Fondre) made the score a crushing 5-0. The Wanderers did not create a single real chance after the break, and their goalkeeper did not save a single shot.

This result was Sydney FC's biggest win in the history of the derby. Bets on the exact score of 5-0 or a 2.5 handicap for Sydney FC, which were priced at odds of over 20.00, yielded thousands of dollars in winnings.

Defeat to Adelaide United: 0-1 in the 2007 semi-final

Sydney were considered clear favourites: the odds on them winning were around 1.50, while Adelaide's were above 5.00. The Sydney team had a strong line-up with players like Steven Corbo and Dwight Yorke, and they rarely lost at home.

The game started with Sydney FC pressing: in the first 20 minutes, they had three shots on target, but Adelaide goalkeeper Aegen van Geijl saved them all. In the 28th minute, Travis Dodd broke through on the wing and scored the only goal with a shot into the far corner - 0-1. In the second half, Sydney FC increased the pressure, creating chances for York and Corbo, but Adelaide's defenders, including Antonio Popovic, held firm. The match ended in a narrow victory for the visitors, which came as a shock: Sydney FC were knocked out of the playoffs, while Adelaide advanced and reached the final.

This upset led to big wins on bets against the favourite. For example, a $200 bet on Adelaide to win at odds of 5.50 brought one bettor a net profit of around $1,100.

A 3-0 rout of Newcastle Jets in 2006

In the 2005/2006 season, on 18 February, Sydney FC hosted Newcastle Jets at Allianz Stadium. Sydney, as the league leaders, had odds of around 1.40 to win, while the Jets, the underdogs, were at 7.00. It was a playoff match.

Newcastle started aggressively, blocking several attacks, but in the 12th minute, Joseph Saponare scored the first goal after a corner kick. By halftime, the score was 2-0, with Saponare scoring the second goal in the 38th minute, taking advantage of a rebound. In the second half, Sydney FC added a third goal in the 65th minute (scored by Wesley Lang), completely overwhelming their opponents. The Jets did not make a single shot on target, and their defence collapsed under the pressure.

Although Sydney was the favourite, bets on the exact score of 3-0 or a total of over 2.5 with high odds (around 8.00) brought in winnings. One example was a £50 bet on a -1.5 handicap for Sydney, which won £400.

Victory over Melbourne Victory: 2-1 in 2010

The 2009/2010 A-League final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory on 13 March at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne was a classic. Victory, as hosts and favourites, had odds of 1.80, Sydney - 4.00. It was the peak of the Big Blue rivalry.

Victory took the lead in the 9th minute when Carlos Hernandez scored from a pass by Archie Thompson. Sydney equalised in the 31st minute when Steve Korbo headed in from a corner. The second half was evenly matched, but in the 87th minute, Mark Bridge scored the winning goal for Sydney after a solo run. Victory missed several chances, including a shot that hit the crossbar.

This triumph brought Sydney their second title. Bets on their victory with odds of 4.00 yielded large winnings: for example, £500 turned into £2,000.
